SUMMARY:Rise and Design - AI is great but...
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all had our minds blown over the last couple of years\, dazzled and amazed by what AI can do and ‘create’. Including the image above.\nWhile Copilot\, ChatGPT et al can do a great job of gathering information\, refining spreadsheets\, creating code and analysing data\, there are some areas where it can’t match the human touch.\nSo we’ll be hearing about some of tasks that simply can’t be replicated or replaced by AI\, not yet anyway\, and some of the problems and issues you might face when you a hand over too much responsibility to a machine. A very efficient machine\, but a machine none the less \nSpeakers include – \nElizabeth Waterman\, Design Consultant\, e3design\nFrom their studio on the banks of the Tyne\, e3design turn ideas into products\, whether you’re a global brand such as Tommee Tippee\, P&G or Unilever\, or a start-up company that has big plans\, such as MudDaddy\, OGEL or Geordie Gin.\nBut increasingly\, they’re being approached with more than an idea or concept\, but with a fully rendered design created by one of any number of freely available design tools. And more often that not\, these ‘products’ are not just impractical\, they’re completely unmanufacturable\, or even downright dangerous. And while these tools can be invaluable for generating ideas\, they’re simply no match for a designer with years or decades of experience. Elizabeth will talk about how to get the right balance between human and machine. \nAlex Craig\, Partner and Head of Commercial\, Muckle LLP\nWhether it’s a contract\, a license agreement or a patent application\, Chat GPT can rustle up a credible looking legal document in a matter of seconds. But as the saying goes\, ‘the devil is in the detail’\, and you really don’t want to find out the hard way that the agreement you thought was watertight is actually full of holes. However there are many ways in which AI is helping lawyers to be more efficient and to deliver a better service. Muckle have been operating as a law firm in Newcastle since 1920\, helping regional\, national and international clients with their legal needs\, and Alex will tell us more about how they are adapting to this new world. \nJames Hanson\, Founder/Designer\, Layers Studio.\nBranding and marketing relies on visual images to convey the right messages and foster familiarity. We all know that a logo is not a brand\, and while there are numerous apps that can create a free logo in seconds\, what they can’t create is that deep understanding of your values\, mission\, and why your customers love you. And because ‘people sell to people’\, it really can’t be left in the hands of something that isn’t…..people. However there are a myriad of useful tools out there and so James will tell us more about how they navigate this AI powered world. \nAnd as usual there’ll be lots of time for chatting and meeting new fabulous people. \n  \n📆 Friday 11th September\n🕰️ 09:30 – 12:30\n📍 The Catalyst\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, NE4 5TG

SUMMARY:Getting Started with Agentic AI
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nThis workshop will demystify AI agents\, explaining what they are\, how they work\, and why they behave differently from other AI tools. \n\n\n\n\nMost people have used a chatbot by now\, but AI agents are a different thing entirely and the gap between the two is where a lot of confusion sits. \nThis workshop walks you through what an agent actually is and why it behaves differently from the AI tools you might already be using day to day. \n  \nWhat’s On?\nLooking at how agents get access to your tools and data\, comparing the two main approaches: Model Context Protocol (MCP) and direct API integrations. This will help you understand the trade offs rather than just the buzzwords. \nExploring the differences between running these systems on your own hardware and leaning on cloud services\, which matters for cost and for keeping control of your information. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have a clear picture of how an agent is built\, even if you never write a line of code yourself\, so you can have sensible conversations with developers or suppliers. \nThis workshop is aimed at small businesses and charities who want to understand the technology properly before spending money on it. No prior technical knowledge needed. \n  \n\n\n\n\nAbout Digital Pathfinders\nThis fully funded event is part of the Digital Pathfinders programme\, supported by the North East Combined Authority. Attendance is exclusive to SMEs\, charities\, and social enterprises registered or trading in County Durham\, Gateshead\, Newcastle\, North Tyneside\, Northumberland\, South Tyneside\, or Sunderland. \nTo attend\, you’ll need to register with the Digital Pathfinders programme\, which provides access to additional workshops\, events\, and one-to-one support. If you haven’t yet registered with the programme\, you’ll be prompted to do so after signing up. Registration details can be found at digitalpathfinders.uk. \n  \nFor questions or accessibility requirements\, please email: hello@digitalpathfinders.uk \n\n  \n📆 Wednesday 18th November\n🕰️ 09:30 – 12:30\n📍 The Catalyst\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, NE4 5TG

SUMMARY:Business NOT as usual : People's Emergency Briefing
DESCRIPTION:The film looks at what climate and nature crises mean for food\, health\, economic stability\, and everyday life in the UK. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a screening of The People’s Emergency Briefing\, a short film presented by Chris Packham that brings together leading UK experts to set out the latest evidence on the climate and nature crises. The film looks at what these changes mean for food\, health\, economic stability\, and everyday life in the UK. \nThe climate and nature crisis threatens all aspects of British life\, from national security to the food supply. Solutions exist but we need a rapid\, WW2-scale response\, and for the government to act now to build the solutions needed. \nThe National Emergency Briefing (“NEB”) was commissioned in response to a simple but profound democratic principle: people should be trusted with the truth about major risks that affect their lives. \nWe will be joined by Hayley Fowler\, Profesor of Climate Change Impacts at Newcastle University\, who was one of ten UK’s leading experts who briefed an invited audience of more than 1\,200 politicians and leaders from business\, culture\, faith\, sport and the media in Westminster in November 2025. \nPlease come and watch the film and make up your own mind about whether action on the climate and nature crises is needed. \n📆 Wednesday 30th November\n🕰️ 12:30 – 14:00\n📍 The Catalyst\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, NE4 5TG

SUMMARY:AiX Conference | AI & Design Conference | Newcastle
DESCRIPTION:Join AiX Conference\, the AI & Design conference in Newcastle on 21 April 2027. Hear from industry leaders. \n\n\n\n\nAI is changing how design work is done. AiX is a day for the people navigating it. \nAiX is a brand-new\, one-day\, single-track conference at the intersection of AI and Design — the first of its kind in the North East of England. Join designers\, product teams\, founders\, and curious minds at The Catalyst on Newcastle Helix to learn how real product teams are actually using AI in their work. \nTools\, workflows\, and expectations are evolving faster than teams can adapt. Design is no longer just UI\, Figma\, and the double diamond — it now spans systems\, agents\, prompts\, and AI-assisted design tools. There’s no playbook\, and everyone is experimenting in isolation. AiX exists to change that. \nThe day covers three areas: \n🛠 AI in Practice — how product teams are designing with AI today: real workflows\, real tools\, real constraints \n🧩 Adaptive Design Systems — moving from static systems to AI-driven\, adaptive ones \n🔮 The Future Designer — what the designer’s role becomes as the craft is redefined \nWho it’s for: product designers\, UX/UI designers\, design leads\, product managers\, founders\, and engineers working closely with design. \n📆 Wednesday 21st April 2027\n🕰️ 09:00 – 16:30\n📍 The Catalyst\, Newcastle upon Tyne\, NE4 5TG
