£22 Million Committed to Advancing Health and Life Sciences Innovation in the UK
£22M awarded to Newcastle University by the National Institute for Health and Care Research to continue research
Newcastle University has been awarded £22M by the National Institute for Health and Care Research to continue research identifying emerging medicines, diagnostics, devices and digital technologies.
Transforming Health Through Innovation
Emerging medicines, diagnostics, devices, and digital technologies hold the power to revolutionise healthcare, reduce disparities, and build a more agile and resilient health system.
A new five-year award will support the work of the internationally renowned NIHR Innovation Observatory, based at The Catalyst. The Observatory delivers strategic intelligence to inform national health and social care policy, guide investment, and accelerate the uptake of innovative technologies.
Strengthening Collaboration and Infrastructure
This funding will enable the Observatory to enhance its methodologies, upgrade its technical infrastructure, and expand its foresight capabilities. It reflects the UK Government’s ongoing commitment to horizon scanning as a critical tool for future-proofing health and care services.
The Observatory will work closely with key government departments—including the Department of Health and Social Care and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology—as well as regional stakeholders, charities, SMEs, and potential investors across the health and life sciences sector.
Driving Smarter Decisions and Global Leadership
Professor Dawn Craig, Director of the NIHR Innovation Observatory, commented:
“We’re thrilled to receive this competitive funding award. It will strengthen our ability to transform data into rapid, actionable insights—supporting faster innovation adoption, smarter decision-making, and deeper collaboration with industry and national partners.
By enhancing our analytical capabilities and fostering cross-sector partnerships, we aim not only to improve care but also to help position the UK as a global leader in health technology and innovation-led growth.”
Delivering Early Insights for Impact
Located in Newcastle’s Helix innovation district, the Observatory plays a vital role in identifying emerging trends in health and life sciences. Its insights empower policymakers, regulators, charities, and industry leaders to act early—aligning policy, investment, and regulation to create a thriving environment for innovation.
This proactive approach improves patient outcomes while reinforcing the UK’s global standing in life sciences, attracting investment and driving economic growth.
