Your Insights Matter: North East Life Sciences Sector Launches 2025 Pulse Survey

North East Life Sciences Organisations Urged to Share Insights in 2025 Industry Survey

February 11th 2026

Health and life sciences organisations across the North East are being encouraged to contribute their views on the sector’s current challenges and emerging opportunities, as the North East Pharma, HealthTech and Life Sciences Pulse of the Industry Survey 2025 launches for its second year.

Led by Square One Law in partnership with the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), the survey aims to provide a clear “temperature check” of the regional industry—spanning biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and healthcare services.

A crucial barometer for regional innovation

Helen Brain, Head of Commercial Law at Square One Law, emphasised the importance of gathering widespread input:

“There are so many people and businesses doing incredible things in the North East when it comes to health and life sciences, but all too often they don’t receive the support they need.

“That is why the North East Life Sciences Barometer is so important. It shines a light on both opportunities and challenges, helping to fight for the support and finance required to ensure the sector continues to reach its potential.”

Brain urged as many professionals as possible to participate, noting that the survey takes just five minutes but can make a real difference to research areas, business needs, and wider sector development.

Building on last year’s insights

The 2024 survey collected responses from more than 30 companies—90% of them small or medium‑sized businesses. Respondents highlighted several key barriers, including:

  • Access to investment
  • Availability of laboratory space
  • Intensifying international competition

Despite these pressures, many organisations reported steady or improved financial performance, with firms expanding into new markets, progressing clinical trials, securing patents, and raising new funding.

Strengthening the region’s voice

Dr Alex Cole, Director of Market Strategy at CPI, stressed the impact of strong sector participation:

“This barometer gives us the insight we need to champion the region more effectively. Every response strengthens our ability to push for the right support, the right investment, and the right conditions for companies to thrive.”

Get involved

Businesses operating within the North East’s health and life sciences ecosystem are invited to take part and ensure their perspectives help shape future strategy and regional advocacy.

If you work in the sector, complete the survey and make your voice heard.
