Remembering Helen McArdle CBE: A Life of Care, Leadership and Lasting Impact

Celebrating a remarkable woman whose compassion, vision and philanthropy left a lasting legacy in the North East.

April 27th 2026

The North East has lost one of its most influential business leaders and philanthropists with the passing of Helen McArdle CBE, who died peacefully aged 77 following a long illness. Her legacy is woven deeply into the region’s care, education and charitable sectors, and her impact will be felt for generations to come 1.

Helen McArdle was a true pioneer of the care industry. Beginning in the 1980s, she founded Helen McArdle Care, growing it over three decades into a network of more than 50 care homes. Her work was driven by a clear and unwavering purpose: to provide dignity, compassion and high-quality support for people at every stage of life. This commitment later extended into early years education through the creation of Kids 1st Nurseries, reflecting her belief that care should begin from childhood and continue throughout life 1.

Her leadership style combined commercial acumen with genuine humanity. Helen did not simply build successful organisations; she built teams, opportunities and standards that reshaped expectations across the sector. In recognition of her influence, she was awarded a CBE in 2015 for services to the care industry and the local community, followed by a lifetime achievement award at the North East Business Executive of the Year Awards in 2017 1.

Beyond business, Helen McArdle was a devoted philanthropist. She believed strongly in giving back to the region that had supported her success. Her generosity touched many causes, from health and education to community wellbeing. Notably, she donated £500,000 to the Foundation of Light, £2.5 million to Newcastle University to support ageing research – where an atrium now bears her name – and £2.5 million to the University of Sunderland to help train future nurses and care professionals 1.

These contributions were more than financial gifts; they were strategic investments in people, knowledge and the future of care in the North East. Helen understood that lasting change comes from empowering others, whether through education, research or frontline support.

Above all, those who knew her speak of Helen as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. While her professional achievements were considerable, family remained at the heart of her life. That balance of ambition and compassion defined her character and set her apart as a role model for leaders across all sectors 1.

Helen McArdle’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary life, but not the end of her influence. The organisations she built, the causes she championed and the people she inspired stand as a lasting tribute to a woman who dedicated her life to caring for others and strengthening her community.
